As the senior United States Senator from Tennessee, the Conference Chair of the Republican Party, the 45th Governor of Tennessee (1979-1987), former University of Tennessee President, and former U.S. Secretary of Education (1991-1993), Senator Alexander has a track record of keeping education on the forefront of political discussions and decisions. Senator Alexander recently stated the following:
"Since February 18th, 2008, almost 20 of the top 100 student lenders have stopped issuing federally guaranteed student loans. We cannot afford to let college slip out of reach for this generation of students. Our economy and way of life depend on a well-trained and educated workforce, and it's imperative that we make sure that students and families can pay for college."

The event will benefit the work of COMPASS, an organization promoting student success by developing partnerships between the business community and Sumner County Schools. Programs administered by COMPASS include Educate & Grow Sumner County, an economic development initiative and scholarship program that, in its inaugural year, offered scholarships covering tuition and fees to Volunteer State Community College to 113 Sumner County graduates.
